- There are two must do's to start the process of renewing or applying for a new CCW. Register for one of our classes and register/apply with the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department.
How long does it take to renew or get a new CCW license?
- From the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office:
- "Unfortunately due to our current critical staffing levels and the ever-growing backlog of CCW applications, Renewal CCW’s are currently expiring for two to three months regardless of when they were submitted. Also if you are a New CCW applicant, the processing is on hold until Renewal CCW’s can be caught up."
- EDSO has done a tremendous job catching up on the back log of renewal CCW's. If you start your renewal process by signing up on their web site 90 days before your permit expires, attend our class (the certificate you will receive from CCW of California is good for 1 year) and submit your certificate, you should receive your renewed permit before it expires.
- Renewal CCW applicants should complete their class and apply 90 to 120 days before their CCW expires. This will help reduce the likelihood of experiencing any time without a valid CCW. You can apply online with the Office of the Sheriff before completing the required CCW course and inspection/range qualification.
- New CCW applicants should complete their class and apply ASAP. The wait to receive a CCW can vary based upon how many applications are being processed, staffing levels, complexity of your background check, etc. The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office is doing all that they can to reduce the wait, but plan on 6-9 months or longer. Contact the Office of the Sheriff for more information.
How long is the Training?
- New 2019 CCW laws require applicants to undergo a minimum of eight hours of training for new applicants and renewals four hours. All applicants are now required to pass a live-fire shooting qualification to receive a concealed carry weapons permit with every firearm you wish to have on your CCW.

According to California Penal Code section 16850, the term "locked container" means a secure container that is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle but does not include the utility or glove compartment.
